George Philip George was educated at Sydney Boys High School, joined the Australian Army Militia serving in the Artillery until transferring to the RAAF in 1941.

His flying training commenced at Narromine in the West of New South Wales, then to Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada and on to the UK.

George was initially stationed at 34 O.T.U. Pennfield Ridge and, after completing his training, he joined 49 Squadron at Fiskerton.

Once he became 'tour complete' (26 operations including 12 to Berlin) he was sent to 5 L.F.S. at Syerston for Instructor training. Other postings followed before finishing the war at 1668 (Lancaster) Heavy Conversion Unit at Bottesford.

He was scheduled to receive his DFC at Buckingham Palace early in 1945 but an opportunity to take a place on a ship bound for Sydney Australia arose and he grabbed this, arriving back in Australia to be married to his fiancee.

His next posting was to the Gen. Recce.School. at RAAF Bairnsdale in Victoria, he was on the way to undertake Photo Recce flying Mosquitos. The war in the Pacific ended before he could be posted away and he took his leave of the Air Force.
