THE UNSEEN WATCHERS OF RUNNYMEDE

In silent splendour here it stands
With graven names from many lands
For these there are no known graves
Some rest beneath the ocean waves
Some lie unknown in other lands
In jungle ways and desert sands

And so to Runnymede each year
We wend our way from far and near
In tribute to the ones who died
We come in sadness but in pride
These are the men who at the call
Went forth to war and gave their all

But while we stand to place and post
There comes, unheard, a mighty host
Of unseen watchers, there they stand
And join with us in Brother band
We may not see, we may not hear
But yet we feel their presence near

And when that moving hour has gone
This thought; this feeling lingers on
They gave their lives, their hopes, their fears
Let us remember through the years
And join with heart and hand and deed
The Unseen Watchers of Runnymede
