16/17 December, 1940; MANNHEIM:

Bomber Command launched approximately 100 aircraft against Mannheim on a cloud free moonlit Monday night. 49 Squadron contributed 10 aircraft of which 5 bombed the primary target; 1 attacked a railway station and another bombed railway lines. One 49 Squadron aircraft failed to return; the unfortunate crew piloted by F/Lt Tony Scoltock (X3063) is believed to have crashed in the sea off the Isle of Wight. The crew was all posted as missing; their names are recorded at Runnymede.
The raid itself was not a success; the cost had been 3 aircraft lost with a further 4 crashing in England.
