4th September 1942: Bremen

F/Sgt Steer was the Mid-Upper Gunner on board Lancaster R5894 tasked with bombing the Focke Wulf aircraft works.

En route, P/O Perry and crew were attacked by a German night fighter which raked the aircraft with cannon fire. After the combat, one of the gunners, Sgt A C Steer RAAF baled out and became a PoW; it is not known if he was wounded. The bomb load was jettisoned over enemy territory and the aircraft returned early to base. The remainder of the squadron completed their sorties successfully before returning to Scampton.
