8/9 July, 1943; COLOGNE:
After 5 frustrating days, in which 3 operations had beenĀ planned, only to be scrubbed at the last minute, 280 plus Lancasters eventually took off to pay another visit to Cologne. Fiskerton put up 14 aircraft. Sadly, one of the 7 Lancasters lost this night was from 49 Squadron; Sgt pilot, Stan Eyles (who was only 20 years old) and his crew all perished when they were shot down by a night fighter. Oblt Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer (II./NJG1) sent them crashing into the banks of the Albert Canal near Antwerp; at 02.53hrs. The crew are buried together in Antwerp Cemetery.
