'Jack' Kermode is standing on the far left of the photo - those kneeling are the ground crew.
It was taken a few days after the end of the war when he was with 99 Squadron on the Cocos Islands. The aircraft in the background is a Liberator and he was a bomb aimer. By this time he was a Pilot Officer, although when he was with 49 Squadron he started as a Sergeant, being promoted to Flight Sergeant in August 1944.
He left the RAF as a F/O. His birth names were Arthur Leonard Kermode, although he was known to his family as John and to his airforce colleagues as Jack.
