9/10 January, 1942; BREST/MINELAYING:

Around midnight, Scampton once again reverberated to the sound of Hampdens taking off for operations. 49 Squadron were sending 9 aircraft after the battle cruisers in Brest harbour, whilst 5 more aircraft were to plant mines in the Brest area.
Of the minelayers, 3 were successful in planting their mines, 1 was unable to find the target area and the fifth was sadly reported missing: P/O Thomas Jacobs (AD909) and crew are presumed to have come down into the sea and their bodies have never been recovered.
