W/O Heard was killed on 18th July 1943 flying with 1485 Gunnery Flight.
He was taking part in a training demonstration when, during the corkscrew manoeuvre, the starboard wing of the Wellington III (BK 235) broke off completely. All on board, including several senior officers, were killed.
W/O Heard is buried at the Brigg Cemetery in Lincolnshire.
