The cause of death is not known but he may have been a victim of the flu epidemic.

He died in the Craigleith Hospital,  Edinburgh, while home on leave from France.

At the time of his death, the Squadron was based at Bavay.

It is assumed that William Gillon was a member of the groundcrew although "enthusiastic" junior ranks were known to act as air gunners/observers.
This custom extended into the early days of WW2 when some groundstaff also flew as gunners in Hampdens.
