Additional details via Dawn Heath:
As far as Father's operations are concerned, he flew a total of 30 Operations including the First and Second 1000 Bomber raids on Cologne and Essen in June 1942 in a Wellington. These two raids were when he was based at RAF Upper Heyford as an instructor. To get the magic number, Harris called on all the bombers the RAF could muster including the OCU aircraft for these raids. The balance were flown out of Scampton when he was in B Flight 49 Squadron and were all in Lancasters.
My uncle was awarded the DFC and MBE during his service, sadly he died at the age of 44 of cancer, having attained the rank of Wing Commander.
He was OC B Flt 49 Sqn from June 1942 until April 1943.
