27/28 May, 1941; MINELAYING:

At 22.00hrs, 9 aircraft from the squadron began taking off on minelaying sorties. One aircraft returned early with engine trouble and 2 aircraft were unsuccessful in finding their target due to the cloudy conditions. For the first time since 21 March, the squadron suffered an operational loss; sadly S/Ldr David Smith (AD729) and crew were reported missing; it is feared that they came down in the sea.
The crew names are remembered on the Runnymede Memorial.
