Bert Weatherley enlisted in October 1940 and joined 49 Squadron in September 1944 as a wireless operator. His first operation was on 23rd September to Handorf. He flew 34 operations heading for a tour of 36 when the rules were changed to 30 operations for a full tour. His last operation was on 8th April 1945 to Lutzendorf. His pilot until 13th January 1945 was F/Lt Jack Nowrie and the remaining operations were with F/Lt Jimmy Milburn.

Postwar he transferred to 246 & 511 Squadrons flying in Avro Yorks to India. His son Ian was born while he was in Almaza on route between India and Lyneham. His final trip was on July 8th 1946. He joined the Reserves flying Ansons until April 1953. He then worked for the Post Office before qualifying as an H.C.O in the Civil Service and finished his career as Higher Executive Officer in the Admiralty in 1981.
