On the 24 July 1940, the squadron said goodbye to one of its most popular Officers; Canadian, F/L Nells Timmerman DFC who had flown with 49 from the onset of hostilities.
By his example of determination and daring airmanship, he had helped promote 49 Squadron into one of Bomber Commands premier units.
F/L Timmerman, was now being 'rested' and was posted to 14 OTU at Cottesmore, but he would later return to ops, becoming CO of 408 RCAF Squadron at Syerston, where he would complete his second tour on Hampdens.
