16/17 August, 1940:MERSEBURG:

Eight of the unit's Hampdens attempted to bomb the oil target of Merseburg. One aircraft brought its bombs back; only P/O Pinchbeck claimed to have attacked the primary. Sgt Stretton (P1333) and crew failed to return from this operation. It was confirmed later that they had in fact crash landed near Breda in Holland and that all 4 crew members had been taken prisoner.
