John Middleton, No. 24 Squadron RAAF, of Subiaco, Western Australia.
A clerk prior to the war, he enlisted on 15 August 1940. On the 18th May 1943, while attached to 49 Squadron, F/Sgt Middleton was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) for successful raids on Berlin, Essen and Ruhr. He flew a few operations as Wop/Ag in Hampdens, Manchesters and Lancs from Scampton and Fiskerton. Later attached to No. 24 Squadron RAAF in Australia. F/O Middleton was killed in action on operations over Banka Island (off the coast of Sumatra) on the 5th August 1944, aged 25. F/Sgt MIddleton is buried in the Adelaide War Cemetery |
